I strongly believe that inclusion and diversity drive creativity and innovation. Through this lense I have sought out opportunities, both inside and outside Mastercard, that allow me to not only be part of but also to lead teams of people with diverse thoughts, backgrounds and experiences.

Girls4Tech

From a young age, science was one of my favorite subjects and I was fortunate to have many opportunities to explore this passion. Even though more and more girls are going into STEM, there is still a large gender gap in these fields. According to the National Science Foundation, women make up 50% of the workforce but only 29% of science and engineering jobs. This is why I am extremely passionate about Girls4Tech - Mastercard’s signature STEM education program that focuses on inspiring careers in science, technology, engineering and math to students across the globe. My hope is that all girls one day have the same opportunities I did - the opportunity to experiment and innovate.

Over the past few years I’ve volunteered at many Girls4Tech events, but one thing remains constant: there’s nothing more rewarding than the look on a young girls face when she suddenly understands what an algorithm is or how to crack a code.

I recently played a significant volunteer role at two Girls4Tech events in Washington D.C.:

  • Mastercard had a Girls4Tech booth at the 2018 USA Science & Engineering Festival, which saw close to 2,000 visitors across three days - families, students and educators interested in learning more about STEM and what Mastercard is doing in the space. Tailoring the curriculum across ages 5 to 18 is challenging, but worth it!

  • Partnering with Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, Mastercard was able to host a Girls4Tech session in the morning and then surprise students with a Priceless Experience. A trip to see a Nationals game, including a visit from Max Scherzer, the Nationals Pitcher - check out the video recap here!

Mastercard most recently announced a partnership with Scholastic, which will put Girls4Tech resources directly in the hands of teachers and help reach and inspire even more students.

Inspiring young students to go into STEM and making resources easily accessible: Priceless!

Mastercard’s Business Resource Groups

Women’s Leadership Network, Purchase Chapter Co-Lead

The WLN is a community of women that enables learning and development through a culture of mentoring, coaching and education to help advance women’s careers. As Purchase Chapter Co-lead, I have led a steering committee of up to 16 wonderful female colleagues that have focused on creating events and initiatives that meet our members’ needs. During my tenure, I’ve actively focused on enhancing our executive mentoring program, Circles, leading to increased engagement.

Young Professionals (YoPros), Global Co-lead

The Young Professionals Network (YoPros) has three main pillars: 1) advancing personal and professional development, 2) being champions of technology and innovation and 3) being agents of change. The current focus for the 2019 YoPros Strategy is building out “YoPros As A Service” - a program designed to partner with business units and identify areas throughout the business where the perspective of millennials can be leveraged to provide business insights and help drive solutions for our customers.

ADAPTability, Purchase Chapter Marketing and Communications Lead

Adaptability provides a support network of friends, families and colleagues for people with disabilities. As the newest BRG, our mission is to 1) provide an environment that attracts, engages as well as retains people with disabilities and parents/relatives of those who have disabilities, 2) educate and spread awareness and support for those with both seen and unseen disabilities, 3) foster a mentoring culture to allow for more open dialogue with managers and employees, and 4) influence our products and solutions so they are more accessible to people with disabilities. Since forming, we have coordinated multiple educational webinars bringing in external resources and have sponsored fundraisers, awareness campaigns and walkathons for as variety of causes.

In partnership with Her Honor Mentoring, Mastercard and the Women’s Leadership Network hosted an Honesty, Integrity, and Inclusion Workshop featuring (from Left to Right): Trecia Pessoa, Shawn Miles, Kelly Joscelyne, Lauren Ottulich, Michael Fraccaro, Linda Kirkpatrick and Jennifer Lowe.

Madison Strategies Group

Advisory Board Co-Lead

Madison Strategies Group is a non-profit organization founded on the idea that while everybody has a unique story, not everyone is equipped with the tools to turn their narrative into a success story. Madison Strategies Group uses an innovative approach to provide a diverse set of individuals - including single parents, immigrants, formerly incarcerated young adults, and families on the brink of homelessness - with the right tools to successfully build a career and take charge of their own future.

I started volunteering with Madison Strategies Group in 2016 and immediately was inspired by the passion of the staff and the motivation of those who came in for MSG services. Through conversations with their Executive Director and their Director of Programs, a colleague and I launched the first ever NYC Madison Strategies Group Advisory Board. Through this process we identified and recruited a board of 7 members from relevant industries and developed a strategy focused on fundraising, corporate engagement, grant extensions and volunteerism. We started an aggressive fundraising campaign within the first 6 months, achieving our goal by raising over $5,000.

The HOW Institute For Society’s NXT-GEN Fellowship for Moral Leadership

In early 2018, I was selected to be one of thirteen Mastercard employees for the inaugural class for The HOW Institute for Society’s NXT-GEN Fellowship for Moral Leadership. The fellowship brought together employees from Mastercard, Unilever, the Center for Open Hiring at Greyston Bakery, World Economic Forum Global Shapers, Global Health Corps and IntegrateNYC. During the nine month intensive, we focused on deep introspection and self-reflection through workshops, case studies and speaker series, all while learning and internalizing the four pillars of moral leadership that Dov Seidman (founder, chairman and CEO of LRN and Author of HOW: Why HOW We Do Anything Means Everything) created:

  • Moral Leaders Are Driven By Purpose - Moral leaders focus on progress, not just results and inspire others to share in their mission and the journey to get there.

  • Moral Leaders Inspire and Elevate Others - Moral leaders do not ask for loyalty to themselves, but rather to the purpose and mission of the organization. They see the humanity in others and are more inclusive for it.

  • Moral Leaders Are Animated by Both Courage and Patience - Moral Leaders focus on doing the next right thing, instead of doing the next thing right. They are open to vulnerability and speaking up for a larger principle, even when the risk is high.

  • Moral Leaders Keep Building Muscle - Moral Leaders never stop learning. They continuously wrestle with questions of right and wrong, fairness and justice, and how to apply these values to their mission.

As a NXT-GEN Moral Leadership Fellow, I am working with my Mastercard cohort to apply what we learned through an impactful practicum at Mastercard. Stay tuned for a Moral Leadership Speaker Series featuring relevant moral leaders from across industries in conversation with Mastercard leaders.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - Tomorrow’s Leaders Member

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s mission is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care.

I was introduced to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation by my friend and colleague, Tommy Ching, who at the time was a member of their young professionals program, Tomorrow’s Leaders. Tommy invited me to join him at an annual CFF meeting. I went in support of Tommy and left as member of Tomorrow’s Leaders. Hearing first hand, the incredible work the CFF is doing and the great strides they are making towards a cure was inspiring. That part that convinced me? Talking with Jillian Tucker, the Senior Development Manager for the Greater New York Chapter, when she explained that since the event was taking place inside, only one person with CF could join the event due to high risk of infection. I couldn’t imagine being passionate but unable to take part.

Since joining Tomorrow’s Leaders, I’ve partnered with Tommy to raise $3,000 for the annual Great Strides Walkathon, and coordinated a cross-organizational event featuring Nik Talbot, the first person with CF to summit Mount Everest. We’re actively planning our next fundraiser, a trivia night in NYC, so check back often for updates!
